Nursing home neglect can lead to falls

Imagine your mother or father pushing the call light in their nursing home. They're meant to wait for a nurse to arrive to help them get up out of bed. They also have to wait for a nurse to go to the bathroom or get dressed.

The nurse is supposed to be there to make sure your parent doesn't fall. You know your mom or dad is a fall risk, so you've made it clear that the staff has to be careful and be there quickly when your mother or father needs assistance.

That's why you were angry when you got a call that your parent fell in the nursing home. You rushed to the hospital to find your parent with broken ribs. They'll heal, but this injury never should have happened.

How can you recognize neglect?

In this case, you may want to speak with your mom or dad about the time leading up to the fall. Did he or she push the call light for assistance? Did the nurse take too long to arrive? How long was it before the nurse discovered that he or she had fallen?

If you find that your parent waited a substantial amount of time with no assistance and had to get up on his or her own because of it, you may be able to file a claim against the nursing home. You should ask and find out how many nurses were on staff that day and see if you can find out how long the call light was active.

If the facility had too few staff members or did not respond to your parent's call light, you may have a strong case against the facility for negligence. No elderly person should have to wait an unreasonable amount of time for assistance.
