Bedsore risks for nursing home residents

When you have a loved one living in a nursing home or assisted living facility near White Plains or another part of New York, you want to feel confident that the care he or she is receiving as a resident is comparable to the care that you, yourself, would provide. Unfortunately, however, many nursing home residents develop injuries as a result of the insufficient care they receive in residential facilities, and the development of bedsores is a common occurrence. At La Sorsa & Beneventano, we understand that bedsores can develop when staff members fail to regularly reposition patients, and we have helped many people whose loved ones suffered injuries in nursing homes and similar environments pursue appropriate recourse.

According to the Mayo Clinic, bedsores, which are also known as pressure ulcers, develop when the skin undergoes exposure to pressure over an extended period of time. Bedsores are especially common in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, as they often develop in people who have limited mobility, and this is why people who are at risk for bedsores require periodic repositioning in order to avoid them.

While the bedsores, themselves, can prove uncomfortable and unsightly, they can also lead to a wide range of related complications, some of which are potentially fatal. In some cases, bedsores can lead to the development of sepsis or cellulitis, which is a skin infection that can cause redness and swelling, among related symptoms. Other times, bedsores can lead to bone or joint infections, which, over time, can reduce the functionality of a patient or resident’s joints and limbs.

Nursing home and assisted living facility staff members must regularly reposition and shift the weight of patients who are at a heightened risk for bedsores. It is also important that they keep your loved one’s skin clean and dry, which may require the frequent laundering of bedding.
