Medical errors the nation’s third-most common cause of death

While it may not surprise you to learn that the top two causes of death in New York and America are heart disease and cancer, the third-most-common cause of death may come as more of a shock. Nowadays, medical errors are among the top three causes of death in America, which is particularly concerning because many such errors are avoidable. At La Sorsa & Beneventano, we recognize that medical errors cause patients and their families considerable hardship, and we have helped many people who suffered due to doctor and health care worker mistakes pursue recourse.

According to CNBC, medical errors are now so commonplace that they kill somewhere between 250,000 and 440,000 Americans each year. It is difficult, however, to determine an exact number of deaths involving medical errors, because funeral directors, coroners and others rarely list medical mistakes as causes of death. These are the professionals that supply the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with their death data, however, which raises questions about whether the 250,000 figure may, in fact, be far too low.

While doctors and other medical professionals typically undergo extensive training, they, like everyone else, are not immune to making mistakes. The problem, however, is that mistakes made by doctors and other medical caregivers can have gravely serious consequences when compared against mistakes made by the average joe.

So, what types of mistakes are killing thousands of Americans annually? Medication dosing errors, which include anesthesia errors, are common, and so, too, are medication mix-ups, which involve one patient receiving the wrong, or the wrong dosage, of a particular medication. Surgical errors, too, are common, and they can range broadly in terms of scope and severity. Other medical mistakes, yet, involve clerical or administrative errors, negligent acts that lead to falls, and missed and delayed diagnoses, among others.
