The link between road construction and car wrecks

Travelling New York’s roadways presents inevitable hazards, with inclement weather, icy roadways and traffic all contributing to the dangers. Road construction, too, presents a notable hazard for today’s motoring public, with construction zones common sites for car wrecks and associated injuries and fatalities. At La Sorsa & Beneventano, we understand that today’s work zones pose numerous threats to New York drivers, and we have helped many people who suffered injuries in construction zones and other areas pursue appropriate recourse.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, car crashes in work zones are on the rise across the nation, rising 42 percent between 2013 and 2015. Additionally, in 2014, 669 people lost their lives while traveling through road construction zones, which accounted for 2 percent of all road fatalities that year.

Certain types of crashes, among them rear-end collisions, also appear to be more common in construction zones than other areas of the roadway. To put it in perspective, while, nationally, about 16 percent of road deaths result from rear-end crashes, 41 percent of deaths in construction zones result from these circumstances.

Just what is it about road construction that makes it so dangerous? While the roadwork itself can present dangers, such as loose gravel, unclear detours or obstructions in the roadway, people who fail to exercise care when making their way through construction zones are also a major part of the problem. Research showed that almost 30 percent of fatal crashes that occurred in work zones in 2014 involved speed, while alcohol was a factor in about a quarter of that year’s fatal construction zone car wrecks. You can find more about car crashes on our webpage.
